Principal - Mr R Wheatcroft

I am delighted to take up the position of Principal at Derby Manufacturing UTC. My appointment to this role in April 2017 has seen me complete an educational full circle. I left school at 18 and completed an apprenticeship at Boots the Chemist in the Pharmaceutical Research Division, during which time I achieved a HNC and subsequently a First Class Honours Degree in Chemistry. Following a period in post graduate research, which included a requirement to teach undergraduates, I then decided I wanted to teach! I have held a variety of roles in schools –Head of Sixth Form, Curriculum Planner, Data Analyst, Vice Principal - all of which will support my role at Derby Manufacturing UTC. My work at the UTC brings together the two aspects of my professional career into one role. This is a great opportunity to work with the young people of Derby and the local industries to provide a highly-skilled and technical workforce for the region.

Our core purpose is to provide an outstanding technical and academic education for 14-19 year olds, as employers and educators join forces to create a unique learning experience, allowing them to become skilled, qualified and experienced young adults. Together we will prepare our young people to be the successful employers, and employees of the future, who will make a positive contribution to the future economic success of the East Midlands.

Graduates of Derby Manufacturing UTC will be confident, well-rounded and articulate. Our young people will leave the UTC and progress into Higher Education, Apprenticeships, jobs with further training or self-employment as skilled, professional and enterprising young people, thus helping to ensure we retain our talent locally. In addition, the UTC will be a catalyst for supporting the raising of standards in surrounding schools, at all levels, through the sharing of outstanding practice.

The sponsors and partners of Derby Manufacturing UTC, (Rolls-Royce, Toyota, Bombardier, University of Derby, Derby College, Derby City Council), believe that the development of the UTC will have a positive impact on the lives of students, our communities, and the engineering and emerging technology-based industries across Derby, Derbyshire and the East Midlands. Our vision for Derby Manufacturing UTC is to be a national centre of excellence for Engineering education and training, with a focus on Advanced Manufacturing, Product Design, Materials Science, Advanced Composites and Sustainability in Engineering. Our vision for the graduates of Derby Manufacturing UTC is to have a skill set that leads to economically independent lives which provides for seventy great years!
