7 October 2015

Derby Manufacturing University Technical College (UTC) was officially opened by HRH The Princess Royal today (Wednesday October 7).

HRH was given a tour of the building where she met with staff and students before unveiling a plaque to mark the opening of the College.

The UTC opened its doors to students in September, offering a new concept in education for 14-19 year olds. Derby is the UK's number 1 high tech city with 12% of the city’s population employed within high tech jobs. The UTC provides an outstanding educational experience, focusing on giving its students the opportunity to develop the technical and employability skills which will enable them to thrive in key local employment sectors.

The Derby UTC is one of 55 new University Technical Colleges (UTCs) being launched across the country by 2017. Sponsored by the University of Derby, Derby College, Rolls-Royce, Toyota, Bombardier and Derby City Council, it is also supported by local employers and offers clear progression routes into higher education, further learning and employment.
