UTC students push their limits with the Royal Navy
3 July 2017
Over two hundred students and staff from nine UTCs have pushed their limits of courage and commitment while taking part in the Royal Navy’s annual Junior Leaders’ Field Gun Competition.
Teams from UTCs in Aston in Birmingham, Derby, East London, Harbourside, Peterborough, Plymouth, Reading, South Devon and South Wiltshire pitted themselves in competition to pull oneand-a-half-ton field guns through a series of coordinated manoeuvres against the clock. Over a week of intense training, during which the teams lived on board HMS Bristol, alongside in Portsmouth Harbour, the teams were mentored by experienced Royal Navy personnel to draw out their leadership and teamwork skills and find reserves of resilience and commitment that were previously untapped.
On the final day of the competition, the UTCs raced against junior teams from the Armed Services, youth organisations and local Further Education colleges in front of a VIP audience.
